David E. Weber, Ph.D., associate professor at University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), Department of Communication Studies, cut his teeth professionally in organizational development. His career in that field included living and working full-time on expatriate status in Asia and the Middle East for six years, book-ended by sojourns in North America.
Twenty years later he came aboard at UNCW, thereby embarking on a career in the academic world. He does, however, still have regular consulting assignments in North America, Europe and Asia.
David’s specialty is working with executives, managers, and other professionals, serving in complex, high-challenge industries, functions and occupations—and in such settings developing one’s skills as a leader, business communicator and team contributor.
As an award-winning university faculty member and researcher, David designs and teaches undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in introductory and advanced organizational communication, organizational culture and research methods. David’s students report that his courses blend theory with practical, field-tested, experience-based solutions concerning communication challenges facing organizations.
David’s background also includes professional storytelling. He presents story recitals for corporations, and for executives at professional conferences. He also teaches storytelling techniques to teachers, trainers, and other professionals. His performances and workshops have taken place throughout North America and in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. He also has appeared several times on U.S. national network television as a storyteller.
From January to June 2014, David will be the resident faculty director of UNCW’s annual study-abroad opportunity at Swansea University, located in Swansea, Wales, U.K., The resident faculty director teaches in Swansea U.’, American studies department and serves as coach and advisor to the two dozen or so UNCW students on this study-abroad program.
